HOW TO GET THERE
You can get to Armenia by all means of transport at any time and every season, by plane, car, train, bicycle...
Means of transport that you are going to use will be less important once you get here. Nothing is inaccessable any more. Once in Armenia, you can be on the top of the mountain, in the afternoon visit a nearby monastery and in the evening enjoy Yerevan.
By Plane
Zvartnots International Airport (IATA: EVN) is 10 km west of Yerevan and is the main airport in the country.
The national carrier is Air Armenia which is currently in development process and will start serving destinations across the CIS and Europe very soon. The Middle East serves Armenia by West Asian airlines (UAE, Gulf Air, Etihad Airways, Syrian, Iranian, etc.). Several European airlines also serve Yerevan: Air France, Austrian, LOT Polish, Ukrainian, etc. Direct flights from Yerevan to Istanbul are operated by Atlasjet.
There are frequent flights from across the CIS. Russian airlines include: Aeroflot, S7, Ural, Polet, Kuban Airlines, Saravia, Tatarstan, UTAir and Yamal. Others include Belevia (Belarus), and SCAT from Kazakhstan.
Shirak Airport (IATA: LWN) in Gyumri which is 128 km away from the capital Yerevan has a few flights from Russia as well.
By Train
There is an overnight train once every other day to Tbilisi, Georgia. There are no train links from Turkey or Azerbaijan. Tbilisi-Yerevan is for round year and it usually takes 10 hours. Batumi-Yerevan is running for summer season only and the duration is about 15 hours. Ticket prices for trains are reasonable ranging from $25-30. So, if you decide to travel to Georgia, you should not miss the chance to visit beautiful Armenia.
By Car
It is possible to drive to Armenia via Georgia or Iran. Local travel agents can arrange transport to the border; some Georgian agents can arrange transport all the way through to Tbilisi. Although more expensive than a train or a bus, a private car may be more comfortable and combined with sightseeing along the way.
By Bus
Through Georgia
There is a minibus (marshrutka) service from Tbilisi to Yerevan for about $17 (30GEL). From this service, it is also possible to get out at Alaverdi (closest major town to the beautiful Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries).
Through Iran
There is a daily modern bus service to Yerevan available from Tehran or Tabriz for about $60/$50; check travel agencies for that. Otherwise, the only Iran/Armenia land border at Norduz/Agarak is served by public transport. On the Armenian side, you can get as far as Meghri by one marshrutka a day from Yerevan. In both directions, marshrutka leaves quite early in the morning. Kapan and Kajaran are more frequently served by marshrutkas, but it is a long and mountainous stretch to the border from there.
From Meghri, it is around 8 km to the border and hitching or taking a taxi is the only option. On the Iranian side, the closest public transport can be found around 50 km to the west in Jolfa, so a taxi (around 10-15$) again is the only (commercial) choice. The border is not busy at all, so when hitching, you have to mainly stick with the truck drivers and Russian or Persian helps a lot here. Please consider personal safety with this option though.
By Bicycle
Bicycle travelers can easily travel to Armenia both from Georgia and Iran. There is not any obstacle if you decide to travel on your own bicycle.
By Foot
This option is possible both from Georgia and Iran and with the same procedure.
Armenia border passing procedure is simple as well, the process usually takes about 20 minutes. Citizens of USA, Canada, EU, Iran and some other countries can get their visa on the Armenian border, only an application and a small payment (3000 AMD/$10) should be made for getting an Armenian Tourist Visa. No visa is required for the citizens of the CIS countries and Georgia.
